A friend of mine explained quite solemnly that she doesn't like Thanksgiving because it represents 'oppresive Christian traditions'.

Um. Yeah. How do you go about explaining the wrongness of wrong that is that statement without alienating said friend and/or boring her to tears with historical detail?

Also, new!landlord somehow got the impression I'm a bible thumper. From my icon corner.

The wrongness just keeps on coming!

Nonono. You're an idol worshipper, if you have an icon corner. (Ss. Peregrine, Hildegard, Benedict, and Oscar Romero and Our Lady of Guadalupe in mine.) And as to the oppressiveness of Christianity, I'm convinced those who bitch the loudest about it are those who still resent that their parents made them go to church. I have no doubt that religion is used to abuse people, but I doubt that those who quote the post-colonial philosopher du jour to back up the oppression were really oppressed.

I hope you told him that thumping books is Bad And Wrong (and makes the baby Jesus cry, naturally). It damages their spines. Especially if it's a hardback book.
